Wisconsin Bonded Title, handled for you

Do you have a vehicle but can't prove you own it the usual way? Wisconsin has a path for that. We prepare the whole application for you, for one flat fee.

What is a bonded title in Wisconsin?

A bonded title (a real title backed by a bond, for when you can't show the normal ownership papers) lets you title a vehicle you own but can't fully prove you own.

This happens a lot. For example:

  • You bought it with only a bill of sale.
  • The seller never handed over the title.
  • The paperwork was lost somewhere along the way.

You post a surety bond (like insurance — it protects a past owner or lender if they ever come forward) for 1.5× the vehicle's value. It protects any prior owner or lienholder (a bank or lender that was owed money on the vehicle). Then WisDOT (the Wisconsin DMV) issues a title with a "bonded" mark on it. The “bonded” brand remains in Wisconsin records for 5 years under Wis. Stat. § 342.12(3)(b).

The process, step by step

  1. Fill out form MV2082 (the bonded-title application) and form MV1 (the standard Wisconsin title application).
  2. Gather proof of how you got the vehicle — bill of sale, receipts, statements.
  3. Mail the forms and the $214.50 title fee to WisDOT in Madison.
  4. WisDOT reviews it. Then they mail you a written request that states your bond amount. Only now do you buy the surety bond from a licensed provider.
  5. Send in the bond. WisDOT issues your bonded title.

What you'll need

  • Completed MV2082 (Application for a Bonded Certificate of Title)
  • Completed MV1 (Wisconsin Title & License Plate Application)
  • Evidence of how you acquired the vehicle (bill of sale / supporting documents)
  • Surety bond for 1.5× value — obtained AFTER WisDOT's written amount request
  • Government-issued photo ID
  • Title fee: $214.50

Common questions

How much is the surety bond in Wisconsin?

It is 1.5× the vehicle's value. The state (WisDOT) sets the exact amount and mails you a written request. Do not buy the bond before that request arrives.

How long does a Wisconsin bonded title take?

Plan on several weeks. Mailed applications take about 20 business days to process (this is an estimate — the state does not promise a set time). The bond step adds time too: the state reviews your application first, then asks for the bond in writing.

Does a bonded title stay 'bonded' forever?

No. The bonded mark stays on Wisconsin records for 5 years (Wis. Stat. § 342.12(3)(b)).

What does TitleFiled actually do?

We fill out your MV2082 and MV1 forms. We tell you exactly what proof to include. We help you get the surety bond once the state asks for it. Then we guide your filing. We are a document-preparation service — not a law firm and not the DMV — and we cannot promise approval.

What does it cost?

Our flat service fee for a bonded title is $499. The state's title fee ($214.50) and the bond premium are separate. You pay those to the state and the licensed bond provider.
