Estimate only, not a quote. WisDOT sets the bond amount in its letter and your surety sets the price. We earn nothing on bonds. How we estimate the premium: WisDOT's bonded title FAQ says premiums average about 1.5% of the bond amount. Listed online prices for a Wisconsin title bond of $2,500 to $6,000 run about $85 to $125 for the full 5-year term (some sellers add shipping or fees). Bonds over $6,000 list at about $15 per $1,000 of the full bond amount (read October 2026). The low end uses the larger of $85 or 1.5% of the bond, the high end the larger of $125 or 1.5%. Sales tax is figured on what you paid for the vehicle, not on the bond, and is declared on your MV1.
Which number to type in
Use what the vehicle is worth, not what you paid. WisDOT values it from price guides, so a $500 barn find that books at $3,000 gets a bond figured on $3,000. If you think WisDOT's value is too high, it also accepts an independent appraisal. When in doubt, run the calculator twice: once with your price and once with a guide value. The real answer is usually between them.
What the results look like at different values
| Vehicle value | Bond amount | Estimated premium |
|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | $2,500 | about $85 to $125 |
| $5,000 | $7,500 | about $112.50 to $125 |
| $12,000 | $18,000 | about $270 |
| $40,000 | $60,000 | priced by the surety |
Two patterns show up. Anything worth under about $1,667 hits the $2,500 floor, so cheap vehicles all land on the same bond. And once the bond passes about $8,300 (a vehicle worth about $5,600), the premium estimate climbs in step with the bond. Very large bonds get no number here because sureties price them one at a time.
When WisDOT's letter arrives
Put the bond amount from the letter into the calculator in place of your guess. Divide it by 1.5 and type that in as the value, and the premium range updates to the real bond. If the letter's number is far above what you expected, that is the moment to think about an independent appraisal, before you buy anything. Then ask a licensed surety or two for a quote on that exact amount and a 5-year term, and compare against the range here.
What the calculator leaves out
Sales tax on your purchase price, plate fees and any local wheel tax. Those go to WisDOT on the same check as the $214.50 title fee, and the Wisconsin title fee calculator adds them up for your county. It also leaves out time. The bond step only starts after WisDOT reviews your first mailing and sends its letter, so buying a bond on day one means guessing at an amount WisDOT has not set yet.
